About Life’s Good Retreat

Life’s Good Retreat began as a dream rooted in family, history, and a love for the mountains. That dream took shape when we purchased Charley’s grandmother’s homeplace—land filled with memories and deep family ties. Charley envisioned creating a place where other families could gather, slow down, and experience the beauty of Transylvania County, with its breathtaking mountains and waterfalls.

Charley’s family has deep roots in this area, having been born and raised in Transylvania County. His heritage is woven into the land itself—his great-grandmother and grandfather’s log cabin still stands in Balsam Grove, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. The property traces back even further to his great-great-grandfather, who purchased the land from the Vanderbilts after working for them, during a time when they offered land to their employees before selling to the state of North Carolina.

Our love for hosting is also shaped by our own passion for travel. Over the years, we’ve explored destinations around the world—from the Maldives and Ireland to the Dominican Republic, Aruba, Jamaica, and even out west to the Redwood Forest. These experiences have inspired us to create a place that feels just as special, welcoming, and memorable for our guests.

Family is at the heart of everything we do. We are blessed with five children and thirteen grandchildren, and their joy and connection are what inspired us to build a space centered around togetherness. Even the design of the retreat reflects that spirit—our interiors were thoughtfully created with the help of my 80-year-old mother and two of my sisters, making this truly a labor of love.

Life’s Good Retreat is more than a place to stay—it’s a place to connect, reflect, and create lasting memories, just as our family has done for generations.
